No 1 is furthest from the flywheel.

Pretty well all, only a few exceptions number from the flywheel end, Renault I think from memory and some V6 / V8s number down one bank then down the other rather than sequentially.

 

I don't know why some manufacturers have decided to confuse everyone by numbering a straight 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 cylinder engine differently to the norm which started in the 19th Centaury? Makes no difference to the running of an engine what you call the cylinders, as long as it's consistent....
